To get a handle on "hand luggage" is to start with the 'virtual' (words) on the other hand making the object nonexistent for the time being.

 'Hand' would represent self and would have a hand in the overall work making it a hands on approach. Hand is the object along with the bag(luggage) both lending a hand to live from hand to mouth, in comes the traveller.
Travellers hand down their handy hints along with hand shakes.
At close hand is their hand luggage and would feel handicapped without it. Why?

 Back to the personal, inside, the objects will, handle problems(medicines, tissues etc), hand and glove items (intimate), handouts (business cards), hand book of tips of sites not to miss places to see and peoples addresses, hand full of useless items each person feel gives them a helping hand on their journey.

 The luggage will pass through many hands in its travels and their lies my idea.

Lend a helping hand in the handiwork and let me witness your hand with your travellers tale, hints, must take objects. To be used abused cherished or discarded on it's return.
