Image Francis Picabia machine postcard and a bag of unspecified white powder

On holiday with Francis.
I was asked to contribute an artwork of limited size to be included in an exhibition traveling to Europe from Australia with the working title, Hand Luggage. Being an artist who works in the found object tradition of modern art my response needed to be minimal in scale but travel with maximum impact.

I chose to include this plastic bag of unspecified white powder because I think the drug trade is not unlike the art industry in that they both have a global cultural and economic impact. Now, TRUE artists and drug addicted people have historically a similar marginal obsessive, risky existence with little or no redemption. Maybe that's why Francis Picabia wrote in his DADA Manifesto 391, No 12 (Paris, March 1920)
"Art is a Pharmaceutical product for imbeciles".
