Proposal for Hand Luggage.The
notion of leaving one's belongings, ( physical or emotional) challenges
the sense of identity and place.
This
work has been boiled, beaten and blended from the Travellers' Palm (the
East-West Tree) to form intricate layers of paper and then bound with
70 year old string, originally handspun from hemp fibre and brought
from Italy to Australia in the mid 1980's.
After
journeying for a long time, there is a sense of pleasure to have finally
left luggage behind to create new layers to contemplate.
My
major influence in starting this work has been learning of wabi-sabi
- an aspect of Japanese aesthetics which values the rough, the unfinished,
isolated and organic.
The work needs to held and sniffed to experience both the texture
and aroma of the brick.
Please enjoy its essence and simplicity. Lesa Hepburn
