"Put some light on the subject."

When buying a slide projector from a second hand shop one afternoon, I was offered free of charge a slide carry case. The case contained over 500 slides from someone's personal collection. The slides were the previous owners holiday snaps from different destinations across the world.

After looking at most of the slides I thought to myself "how could anyone discard such precious memories like these." I started to see the slides in a different way, they obtained a life of their own but needed an identity, for they had lost identity after the former owners threw them away. This was my task, to give the lifeless photos life.

Because the slides were family orientated I decided to make my interpretation of equal status. I gave a separate slide to fifteen family members/relatives and asked them to put life to the visuals with their own text. By juxtaposing the text and the visual I found fulfillment, it was as if I had created or bought to life an identity and soul.

For me "Hand Luggage" represents the memories, whatever you do take on your trip is a memory. Whether it be a brand new jumper or your old toothbrush, it still holds a memory of a certain time in your life.

I've placed the slides in two separate compartments, the text side and the visual side. The container carrying the slides is an actual slide case, as that is the original carriage, it's like a hand luggage in itself. I have opened the case and placed the slides vertically so the viewers can observe at their own leisure.
