Hand
Luggage
The
vision of hundreds of people walking back and forth in an international
airport, all carrying some kind of luggage, each heading in their own
direction.
The
idea of travelling overseas is usually very exciting but in this work,
I have looked at it from another angle. When someone leaves, they are
usually leaving someone else behind and this can cause sorrow and tears.
The
work consists an inscribed relief of someone carrying hand luggage.
This is surrounded by what appears like a section of a letter to a loved
one, expressing feelings of sadness because this person is missed so
much. Tear drops smearing the writing have been made by either the letter
writer or the receiver, this decision is left to the viewer.
I
have used the technique of scoring directly into the watercolour paper,
staining the inscription with ink and using gouache for the lettering.
