Nicole's
Ladder.
Jacobs
Ladder, a toy, a tool or a spiritual conduit to the gods??
For hand luggage it is the synergy of all of these components that
assembles the work...
The
concept, one of expansion (larger than life, bigger than the space prescribed)
into playfulness.
This
work, six segments of white fur covered wood panels will be when folded
will be the size specified by Ross Barber of 145 x 80 x 70 mm will concertina
to three times its length.
An
addition to Hand Luggage previous statement re Nicole's ladder.
The
six segmented ladder with 45mm. long fur was slightly larger than the
specified size, I went about producing another shorter furred version
with eight segments and fluffy tape folded perfectly to the right size
and was easier to use. On the first try it did not work however
on the next it did. A very moody toy but nevertheless a functional one
but a less attractive version of the first, which incidentally did not
work at all [how frustrating]
After
much deliberation and playing with the first model, I refolded the work
in a different way and it came within the prescribed size limit, a solid
square of fur. When laid out flat the size increased to 480 mm by 80
mm by 20 mm. And the latter turned into a very furry flat cat, reminiscent
of childhood toys, games and myths of toys that were proclaimed to do
marvelous things but were always a bitter disappointment.
I
realised the very flat cat was like a strip of fur found in numerous
sample bags at shows and fairs and once patted curled to your touch.
This did not curl to the touch either but was lucious ansd sensual and
very very white.
I
chose to submit the first version of the ladder even though it failed
to work in a predictable manner, it however depicted the nature of failure
in a way which makes you look at all the possibilities of what is success
and what is failure.
