"But you don't make anything." I faced my accuser square on and simply
had to admit the terrible truth in this particular case. Yes I said
over emphatically "but you see I'm a concept artist." Then trailing
off lamely ." I'm interested in Ideas you see.."
I would have offered to give him his money back if he had paid to
enter or a little something for wasting his time, perhaps his taxi
fare back home would suffice.
"I could do you a drawing, I'm not bad at that." I put forward attempting
to gain his confidence. "That wont be necessary," he replied, leaving
me stranded " I've seen enough."
A
colleague of mine proposed that artists make work, so that they might
be loved. Socrates placed a garland on the head of any artist he met
then sent them packing.
Plato tells a story that Socrates sat patiently to hear a story from
a man who told of the wondrous skill of an artist who could paint
various fruit on a tree so real that they fooled the birds. "What
possible use is that." said Socrates.
The
lot of a concept artist especially a regional romantic is not a completely
happy one especially when he must by nature drive out all literal
content and battle with his own literary pretensions.
