Commission Two boxes 'over there' Access Arts Inc.  1999.

The Commissioned works, two boxes inscribed, here, koko, there, soko, over there asoko represent the desire of two organisations, Access Arts and Tanpopo no ye their artists and members to set up a rich, productive dialogue. The work in part was the product of a playful afternoon and a failed attempt by a Japanese friend to impart some of the subtleties of her language to me. The words koko, soko, asoko, here, there, over there are rough equivalents and used in everyday language, they are transparent signifiers. Yet on another level culturally they might impart a darker  historical meaning where:  We are Here and They are always Over there, set apart, signifiers of absolute difference. In context the two boxes inscribed in both English and Hiragana (a script form originally from China for the use of women and children) remind the organisations artists and members that we are indeed here and that they are over there. Yet through a creative dialogue they will spend time here and we there, both working together can begin thinking of each other in terms that undermine ideas of absolute difference and enter into a profitable cultural exchange.
